Bosnia-Herzegovina has a population of 3.483 million and an area 51,200 km2.
The Stabilisation and Association Process (SAP) was adopted in 1999 and might lead to a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA).
The Feira European Council stated in 2000 that all the countries covered by the SAP are potential candidates for EU membership.
The Copenhagen Summit in December 2002 decided that the EU should take over the Police Mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina from the United Nations from 1st January 2003. All Member States take part in this, together with 18 other countries.
Exceptional trade measures have been granted to Bosnia Herzegovina, although the import of animals and animal products has been suspended temporarily.
