Italian Prime Minister from 1983 to 1987. A professor of comparative constitutional law. Amato is a strong supporter of federalism.

Notes

He was vice-President of the European Convention on the Future of Europe and chaired the Convention working groups on the Charter of Fundamental Rights and simplification. He also took the lead in the European Social Democrats' efforts in the EU Convention.
