Term used in the Common Agricultural Policy, CAP, meaning to favour products originating in the EU through common import levies and export refunds.
Imposes extra costs on consumers and increased prices for farmland. Higher prices for agricultural products are normally capitalised.

One of the reasons behind agricultural reform and direct payments to the farmers, rather than price supports.
