Duisenberg, Wim (1935 - )

Dutch economist and former head of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. He retired from the post November 1st 2003 and was succeeded by Jean-Claude Trichet from France.

Was seen as persistent in fulfilling the ECB’s remit to keep inflation low.

Notes

• He had a more limited function that that of his American counterpart, Alan Greenspan. This has led to the ECB adopting a much more conservative interest rate policy.
• Greenspan, the chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank in the USA is - unlike the ECB - charged with the aim of maintaining employment and fostering economic growth.
