A German town close to Belgium and the Netherlands. Capital of Charlemagne's empire in the 9th century. His tomb is located here, inspiring modern efforts towards European unity.

Notes

Every year in Aachen a well-known European receives a prize for his/her work for European integration, known as the Charlemagne Prize. In 2003, the prize went to Giscard d'Estaing and in 2004 the outgoing EU Parliament President of the EU Parliamant, Pat Cox, was the winner.
