Bulgaria has a population of 8 million and an area of 111,000 km².

Applicant country expecting EU membership by 2007.  Has had a Europe agreement since 1995. In July 2003 it finalised negotiations on 26 of 31 chapters (of the acquis communautaire) compared with Romania's 19.

The future

The introduction of the Euro in Bulgaria before 2009 is unlikely.
