Court of First Instance

Under the Single European Act of 1987, the EC Court in Luxembourg was provided with an additional lower court to deal with less important cases, many of them dealing with staff matters. The Court of First Instance, meets in different chambers. Appeals against verdicts on points of law may be made to the EU Court of Justice.

Notes

The Treaty of Nice provides further specialised EU courts.

The future

The Convention on the Future of Europe has proposed that the Court of First Instance be renamed the "EU High Court". The EU Constitution also allows for a qualified majority of 13 out of 25, countries representing 60 per cent of the EU's citizens, to set up more specialised courts.
