Professional sport is regulated by the treaties as an economic activity according to the Bosman case. The EU uses money for sporting activities and promoting the EU during sports activities, and also runs a support project, Eurathlon.

Notes

The EU has decided to make 2004 the European Year of Education through Sport.

The future

The EU Constitution proposes that sport should be covered by supporting action – the EU therefore “may take co-ordinating, complementary, or supporting action” (Art. 16.2).
